Pinebridge Living Learning Center

The future Mayland Community College- Three Peaks Enrichment Center (Pinebridge Building) will contain over 2.9 acres of impervious surface that will contribute significantly to local runoff that may negatively impact the nearby North Toe River (303-d, Turbidity). As such, there is a need to capture, treat and store the runoff to reduce those impacts.
Bioretention cells will be developed and constructed for the site which will capture parking lot stormwater runoff.  In addition, roof runoff will be captured and reused via an innovative cistern system and some roof runoff will also be stored in an underground detention chamber.

The innovative stormwater treatment systems will be monitored by MCC students & staff as well as the Toe Cane Watershed Coordinator to determine the effectiveness fo the Stormwater Control Measures. Curriculum will be designed for area students to learn about the importance of stormwater treatment and will showcase how constructed projects work.
This will include monitoring of the selected plant material endemic to the mountain region, root system growth, stormwater temperature reductions, as well as the removal of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Total Suspended Solids from the runoff. The monitoring protocol will be designed to monitor the inflow and outflow of each bioretention cell.
