Todd Island Park
The Todd Island Park (TIP) is a unique 10-acre island park in the middle of the South Fork of the New River. TIP is located around three miles downstream of the town of Todd, North Carolina, Ashe County and is managed and owned by the Todd Community Preservation Organization (www.toddnc.org). The park has a 1-mile walking trail loop and has a foot bridge to the island from the parking lot/trailhead. TIP is designated as a Mountain Heritage Trout Waters Program by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and as such is a very popular local fishing destination. Brook, Rainbow, and Brown Trout are stocked for a Delayed-Harvest Trout Water. 26.5 miles of the New River, including parts of the South Fork, are classified as a National Wild and Scenic River and belongs to the New River Paddle Trail which starts in Todd.
The TIP was in desperate need of corrective actions to reduce sedimentation from erosion. This Phase I project focused on repairing and planting stream banks, and improving the educational and aesthetic value of the TIP. The Todd Community Preservation Organization (TCPO) manages the park and is excited about the opportunity to stabilize riverbanks on the property which are experiencing severe erosion. Phase II & III will take place in 2020 and beyond.
